Born in Glasgow, he is acclaimed as one of the world’s foremost opera directors. He trained at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy as actor, designer and director. His credits include numerous productions in the most prestigious theatres of the world such as Roberto Devereux, Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci, Giulio Cesare, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Il trovatore (Metropolitan Opera), Les Troyens (La Scala, Milan), Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro (Opera Australia), La clemenza di Tito (Aix-en-Provence Festival), Falstaff (Vienna), The Turn of the Screw, Medea, Alcina and Tosca (ENO), Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Giulio Cesare (Glyndebourne Festival), Wozzeck, Billy Budd and Giulio Cesare (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Semele (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées), The Turn of the Screw and Macbeth (Mariinsky Theatre), Agrippina (Barcelona, Brussels, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Frankfurt). He has received numerous awards.
