Carlo Menippo

He was born in Piacenza Italy on 23/08/1933. He took vocal studies under Ettore Campogalliani and Carlo Tagliabue. He made his debut at the Teatro Nuovo di Milano performing Canio in the opera Pagliacci (1961). After winning a song competition in Reggio Emilia (Italy), he sang in major Italian opera houses such as those of Naples, Bologna and Palermo. He has also appeared at the Vienna State Opera and at the opera houses of Toulouse and Basel. His repertory included mostly dramatic roles in Italian and French operas, such as Don José [Carmen], Radames [Aida], Don Alvaro [La forza del destino], Otello [Verdi’s Otello], Manrico [The Trobadour/Il trovatore], Arrigo [The Sicilian Vespers/I vespri siciliani], Calaf [Turandot], Cavaradossi [Tosca], Dick Johnson [The Girl of the West/La fanciulla del West], Samson [Samson et Dalila], Turiddu [Rustic Chivalry/Cavalleria Rusticana], Pollione [Norma] and Vasco da Gama [The African Woman/L’ Africaine] by Meyerbeer. He has also worked for the Italian television. A single recording of his performance in the opera La forza del destino has been saved to posterity (1960). He worked with the GNO once, interpreting the title role in the premiere of Giordano’s opera Andrea Chenier (Olympia Theatre, 1964/65).
