Georgios Moutsios
Actor, Soloist, Baritone
He was born in Kalamata on 11/7/1932. He studied solo singing at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts, and theater at the National Conservatory Drama School. Later on, he studied singing at the Vienna Music Academy with Elizabeth Radó, as well as theater and direction at the Reinhardt seminars. In 1951 he became a staff member of the National Theater of Greece, appearing as chorus singer in ancient drama productions. In 1963, he made his stage debut with the theater company Nea Skini in Ten Little Niggers (Deka mikroi negroi). Since then, he worked with major Athens-based theater companies including those of Ellie Lambeti, Aliki Vougiouklaki, Tzeni Roussea, Smaroula Youli, etc. He played all kinds of theater roles. He appeared with the National Theater of Greece at the Festival of Nations, Paris. Moutsios was also a pop singer, becoming the major exponent of the so-called New Wave and was also singled out as the ideal performer of Manos Hadjidakis’ songs (Aeriko, I ballada tou stratioti, O kali mou xanthia etc.). He gave many concerts in Greece and Europe (Leipzig, Berlin, Vienna, etc.) and recorded series of Greek songs (C.N.S. Cycle, The Accursed Serpent (To katarameno fidi), etc.). He played in some 51 films (1951-2001) and 27 television productions. He collaborated with the Art Theater in the now classic production of Aristophanes’ The Birds (I Ornithes) directed by Karolos Koun and scored by Manos Hadjidakis, also staged at the Festival of Nations (Paris) and the Shakespeare Festival (London). He died in Athens on 17/7/2012. His GNO appearances include the operettas Die Zirkusprinzessin (1956/57), The Flower of Levante (2001/02), To koritsi tis geitonias (The Girl of the neighborhood, 2003/04), O genikos grammatefs (The general secretary, 2003/04), etc. He was the brother of soprano Maria Moutsiou and mezzo-soprano Sofia Moutsiou.
