Writer and journalist
He was born in Ermoupolis on 5/2/1901. At his young age he became involved with prose, journalism and theater. In 1918, in Ermoupolis, Syros island he published the socialist magazine Anagennisis (Renaissance) in the Greek demotic language and was a contributor with the local newspaper O Ergatis (The Laborer). During the interwar period he regularly worked as a contributor and editor with the newspapers Acropolis, Proti, Imerisios Kiryx, Estia, Kathimerini, Demokratia, Espera, Eleftheros Typos, Proia and the magazines Evdomas, Peitharchia and Theatis. In 1935 he published the newspaper Icho tis Ellados and the magazine Ellinika Grammata, in which contributors included Alexandos Delmouzos, Fotos Politis, Fotis Kontoglou, Vassilis Rotas, etc. He was involved with theater review, wrote plays (Petra scandalou [Storm petrel], To pouli tis nychtas [The night bird], To mondelo [The model], etc.), and became an important figure in the country’s drama scene. He held the position of general director of the Royal (National) Theater (1937-1941) and the National Radio Organization (1961-1963). He introduced the State Literary Awards (1938) and Zappeio’s National Art Exhibition (1938), founded the Stegi Grammaton kai Technon (House of Letters and Arts) (1938), the Thessaloniki Royal Theater (1940) and introduced the roving theater group Arma Thespidos (Chariot of Thespis) (1939). He published short stories and essays. His novel Minas o Rembelos (Minas the Hobo) was awarded by the Academy of Athens (1939) and inspired Manolis Kalomiris to compose a same-titled symphonic poem. He was the inspirer of the founding of the National (Royal) Theater (1939). He took care of equipping the Ziller building with the necessary technical infrastructure and, in close cooperation with Kalomiris, organized and staffed the new institution’s troupe under international standards with 120 Greek and foreign artists, soloists, choristers, ballet, orchestra and ballet school. He was general manager of the National Opera during the periods 1940-1941 and 1959-1964. In the latter period, he encouraged the voting of the institution’s Charter (1959), expanded its repertoire by 28 new operas and promoted works by Greek composers.
