One of the most celebrated lighting designers worldwide, he trained as a stage designer at the Central School of Art in London. He has been lighting productions for almost six decades. His recent opera and dance credits include: Peter Grimes (Opéra national de Paris, ROH, Teatro Real Madrid), Within The Golden Hour, Carmen, Corybantic Games (Royal Ballet), Don Quixote, The King Dances, Edward II, E=mc2, Faster (Birmingham Royal Ballet), Roméo et Juliette (Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Carmen (Miami City Ballet), Beauty and Sadness (Hong Kong), The Queen of Spades (Vilnius City Opera), Madama Butterfly, Carmen, Manon Lescaut, Werther (MET), La traviata, Fidelio (Glyndebourne), The Mask of Orpheus, Madama Butterfly (ENO), Belshazzar, Falstaff, Le nozze di Figaro (The Grange Festival). He has directed and designed concert stagings of the Ring Cycle, Otello and Fidelio and has lit numerous theatre productions. He has received two Olivier Awards (Outstanding Achievement in Dance and Best Lighting Design), South Bank Sky Arts Opera Award, as well as Helpmann and Green Room Awards.
