Dimiter Petkov

He was born in Sofia on 05/03/1938. He studied at the State Academy of Music in Sofia under Christo Brambarov. He made his debut at the Sofia National Opera as King of Egypt [Aida]. In 1967 he won the grand prize in the Young Opera Singers Competition in Sofia. His first appearance outside of Bulgaria was at the Festival of Wiesbaden (1967), followed by appearances in Paris, Naples, Moscow and Barcelona. He participated in the Glyndebourne Festival in 1968 as Osmin in The abduction from the Seraglio [Die Entführung aus dem Serail] and Prince Gremin [Eugene Onegin] in 1970. He also appeared at the Arena di Verona Festival as Philip II [Don Carlos] in 1969 and as Zaccaria [Nabucco] in 1981. During the period from 1972 to 1976 he worked regularly with the Vienna State Opera singing Faust, etc. In 1976 he moved to Geneva. From 1976 to 1989 he sang in Valencia [Ernani, 1976], La Scala Milan (1981, 1984), Barcelona [Simon Boccanegra, 1977], the Paris Opera [Samson et Dalila, 1978 and Káťa Kabanová, 1988], Marseille [Dvorak’s Rusalka], Lisbon [Luisa Miller, 1982], the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1988), Zurich, Rome, Toulouse, Bonn, Florence and Dallas (USA, 1989). Later on he returned to Bulgaria and became a member of the Plovdiv Opera. He recorded Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (EMI), The Khovansky affair Khovanshchina (Balkanton), Queen of Spades [Pique Dame] (DGG), Boris Godunov (Sony), Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots (MRF), etc. He died in 2005. For the GNO, he sang the title role in Boris Godunov (Herodeion, 1972) and Henry VIII [Anna Bolena, 1978/79].
