Thanos Petrakis

Soloist, Tenor
He was born in Athens in 1939. He studied voice at the Greek National Conservatoire, under Artemis Kyparissi and Gaston Depollas, while he also took private lessons under Alekos Souflas. He won a scholarship from the Maria Callas Foundation and continued his studies at Vienna’s Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, as well as at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Milan. In addition, he studied at the National Theater of Greece Drama School and law at the University of Athens. He has appeared in a number of cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He won the Critics and Audience Opera Award at the Bad Hersfeld Festival, Germany as Nero in the opera The Coronation of Poppaea (L'incoronazione di Poppea). He appeared at the Balkan Festival Opera, in the former Yugoslavia, and at the Witten International Festival of Contemporary Music. In Canada, he sang in the opera Turandot at the Opéra de Montréal. He has appeared at the Athens Concert Hall (Die Zauberflöte and in Mikis Theodorakis’ Passion of the Sadducees), at the Heraklion Festival, Crete and has given several concerts in Greek cities. He has collaborated with the Athens State Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) Symphony Orchestra, the Greek Radio Variety Orchestra and the Opera of Thessaloniki. He taught voice at the National Conservatory of Athens, as well as at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata, the Vocal Art Workshop (with Spyros Sakkas), the Higher Theater School of the Aghia Varvara Municipality and the Orfeio Conservatory. He worked with the GNO in the years 1967-1996 during which he appeared in 20 operas and five operettas in 73 productions and/or revivals. He sang starring tenor roles, such as the title role in Don Carlo and Otello, Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Rodolfo (La bohème), Canio (Pagliacci), Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, 1974), Manrico (Il trovatore, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, 1982), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Erik (Der fliegende Holländer), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca), etc. // Last update of the biography: November 2018 - The list of the productions below is complete.
