Anna Petrova

Dancer, Choreographer, Dance Instructor
She was born in Thessaloniki in 1941. She studied at the GNO Ballet School (1950-52), the School of Dance of the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts (1952-1955) and received further training in London, at Marie Rambert’s dance school. She later studied the international teaching system of London’s Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and received the academy’s highest teaching diploma. She joined the GNO’s Ballet in 1959 and in 1960 became an A-class dancer, holding the position for 18 years (1960/1 to 1979/80). She danced her first major part in 1964 accompanied by Giannis Metsis. Between 1959 and 1979, she danced in ballet parts in ten operas and operettas, as well as in 15 productions and ballet revivals: Swan Lake, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Les Sylphides, Romeo and Juliet, Night on Bald mountain, Capriccio Espagnol, La boutique fantasque, Magic Mirror, etc. She began teaching dance in 1971. In 1981, she founded a Higher Professional School of Dance. In 1979 she founded the 40-member Youth Group Dancers (Omada Neon Chorefton), which she directed for three years. As a member of the Greek National Opera’s Artistic Committee (1990-1994), she reorganized and upgraded the GNO’s ballet by recalling acclaimed dance teachers. She held the position of president of the Greek association of London’s Royal Academy of Dance (1997-2004), and received the President’s Award for her contribution to the objectives of the International Dance Organization – IDO (2002). She was also director of the GNO Ballet (1999-2006) and director of the GNO Higher Professional School of Dance. She toured with the Greek National Opera Ballet outside of Greece and represented the country internationally through the program of the Cultural Olympiad. In 2004, she was a member of the judges committee for the International Genee Competition. She was honored by the GNO Society of Friends with the “Apollo” award.
