Luciano Saldari

He was born in 1934. He studied at the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini under Antonio Melandri. He won prizes in various opera competitions in Vercelli, Parma, Mantova and Brescia. In 1957 he made his debut as Duca di Mantova [Rigoletto] at the Teatro Sperimentale Spoleto. During the following years he sang in many Italian cities such as Milano (La Scala), Venice (Teatro la Fenice), Florence, Genoa, Palermo, Naples, Torino, Trieste and Parma. He appeared as a guest singer in major opera houses in Europe including the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opera National de Paris, the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, the Hungarian State Opera and also in Bucharest, Prague, Beograd and Sofia, at the Royal Monnaie Theater in Brussels, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, in Cologne, Essen, Bordeaux, Marseille and Nice. He also sang at international festivals such as Athens & Epidaurus Festival and the Orange Festival (France). He has also appeared at the Johannesburg Opera (South Africa). His repertory includes roles such as Gualtiero [The pirate/Il pirate], Arturo Talbo [I Puritani], Elvino [La Sonnambula], Nemorino [L’ elisir d’ amore], Sir Edgardo [Lucia di Lamermoor], Fernando [The Favorite/La Favorita], Duke of Mantua [Rigoletto], Rodolfo [La Bohème], Alfredo [La traviata], Manrico [The troubadour/Il trovatore], Pinkerton [Madama Butterfly], Vassili [Mavra], etc. He died in 1996. He worked with the GNO once, performing the role of Alfredo [La traviata] (1969-1970).
