Nikos Stefanou
Set Designer, Painter
He was born in 1933. In 1949 he started painting stage sets for the Municipal Theater of Piraeus and other Athenian theaters, as well as for film productions (Finos Film, Anzervos). He worked closely with set designer Dimitris Kentakas, who taught him the art of set design. In 1951/52 he was a member of the team responsible for the conservation of the mosaics at the Dafni Monastery and he also copied icons and wall murals in Agion Oros and the Kaisariani Monastery. He attended the Art History course of Professor Pantelis Prevelakis at the School of Fine Arts, as a guest. In the years 1952/55 he made his first personal stage sets for the performances of the Peiraikos Syndesmos Theater, while in the years 1953 -1959 he worked, among others, with the theater troupes of Katerina Andreadi, Antigoni Valakou and Smaroula Giouli. He was awarded a scholarship by the French government and studied free theater and attended engraving classes at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Then he worked with the Vienna State Opera and other Austrian theaters, the Bavarian State Opera, the French theaters Odeon, Mogador and Châtelet and the British theaters Oxford Playhouse and Roundhouse. At the same time, he continued working with many Greek theaters, such as: The National Theater, the State Theater of Northern Greece, various Regional Theaters, the Art Theater (Theatro Technis) and private theater troupes. Besides set design, he got involved with art painting. In the years Κατά τη περίοδο 1962 - 1967 he created the renowned Atelier in Kallithea with Alecos Fasianos and Vassilis Sperantzas. He also worked with sculptures and ceramics. His works are exhibited in galleries and private collections. At the GNO, he designed the sets in various operettas in the years 1961- 1995: Christina (1961/62, 1962/63, 1963/64), The Godson (O Vaftistikos) (1994/95, 1995/96).
