He was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia on 16/7/1924 and died in Prague in 2014. He studied at the Conservatory of Brno under Bohumila Soběského (1943-47), and at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (1952-56). He continued his studies in singing for five more years in Venice. His debuted in 1942 as Jeník in The Bartered Bride [Prodaná nevěsta], at the amateur folk scene in Brno. During 1943-1945 he was a member of the Choir of the Czech Folk Theatre in Brno. He joined the National Theatre of Brno as soloist and sung in operas and operettas (1945-49). He sung in many regions of Czechoslovakia and appeared at the State Theatre in Ostrava (1956/57). As a staff member with the Prague National Theatre (1957-1990) he sung the role of Jeník as many as 113 times and interpreted lead tenor roles, such as: Radamès (Aida), Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Alfredo Germont (La traviata), Onegin (Eugene Onegin), etc. In the period 1960-1969 he sung in Vienna, Milan, Barcelona, Bucharest, Athens, Dublin, Iceland, etc. He made his Vienna State Opera debut in 1967. He sung an especially extensive repertoire. He received the Talia award by the Union of Czech Actors for his overall contribution to opera. He recorded works by Dvořák (Supraphon) and participated in the complete recording of Janáček’s opera works under Charles Mackerras (1969-73, DECCA). He participated in radio and television concerts. It has been traced back that he collaborated with the GNO twice, as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni, Olympia Theatre, 1966/67) and Hoffmann (Les contes d’Hoffmann, Olympia Theatre 1969/70). // Last update of the biography: May 2020 - The list of the productions below is complete.
