Ηe studied music and drama at the University of Birmingham. He has been staff director for Welsh National Opera (1993/2008) directing revivals of Rigoletto, La traviata, Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci, Béatrice et Bénédict, Carmen, Così fan tutte and Madama Butterfly. His productions include Béatrice et Bénédict (Houston Grand Opera), Il matrimonio segreto (Cardiff International Academy of Voice / Barga Festival), and McNeff’s Tarka the Otter (Buxton Festival). He has directed revivals of David Pountney’s productions of Simon Boccanegra in Prague and
Guillaume Tell in Warsaw and Geneva. His collaborations with Katie Mitchell as assistant director include Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Trauernacht, MacMillan’s The Sacrifice, Pelléas et Mélisande and as revival director Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová, Handel’s Jephtha, Joanna Lee’s The Way Back Home, Jenůfa and Alcina (Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow).
