Vassilis Tenidis

He was born in Larissa on 11/11/1936. He studied law at the University of Athens, as well as classical guitar under Kostas Kefalopoulos and Ivan Psiukov and music theory under Yiannis A. Papaioannou. During the 1960s he composed many songs and ballads, which contributed to molding the style of the Greek New Wave genre. Songs of his were sung by Giorgos Zografos, Michalis Violaris, et al. He has written music for nearly all types and genres: symphonies, chamber music, choral, music for jazz bands, film scores, etc. He was particularly engaged in theater, composing incidental music for more than two hundred plays of all kinds that were staged by: the Greek National Theater (1974-1994), the National Theater of Northern Greece (1979-1991), the Amphi-Theater, the Art Theater, etc. He also excelled as arranger of works by other composers, the most prominent being the Greek National Anthem for symphony orchestra and chorus (Nikolaos Mantzaros), the cantata Hymn of the Mediterranean Games (Mikis Theodorakis), the song cycle Moon’s Neighborhoods [Oi geitonies tou feggriou] (Manos Hadjidakis), a series of works by Ionian islands composers Mantzaros, Carrer, Xyndas, Samaras, Lavrangas, Labelet, Evangelatos, Xenos, et al. He taught in schools, at seminars and educational institutes (IEK), gave many lectures and participated in several conferences and discussions. He has created several series of educational shows for radio and television. He was a close collaborator of Manos Hadjidakis during the latter’s tenure at the Third Program of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT). He is a conductor in ERT’s Music Ensembles and a regular member of the Greek Composers Union. He collaborated with the GNO in the music arrangement and orchestration for the works: Apaches of Athens [Oi Apachides ton Athinon] (1984/85), Remember those years [Thymisou ekeina ta chronia] (2007/08) and The Love Germ [To mikrovio tou erota] (2009/10).
