He was born in London on 04/04/1908. He began dancing professionally in 1928, alongside Marie Rambert, and in 1929 he became her assistant in the “Marie Rambert” dance company. In 1931, he choreographed the works Cross Garter'd, Lysistrata, The Planets, as well as the revolutionary ones Jardin aux lilas and Dark Elegies, in which he starred. Iin 1938, he founded the London Ballet with members from the “Marie Rambert” dance company, including Hugh Laing, Andrée Howard, Agnes de Mille, Pegy van Praagh, Maude Lloyd and Walter Gore. In 1940, they were all called to New York, where they joined the regrouped Ballet Theater, alongside Richard Pleasant and Lucia Chase. Tudor served as a dancer and choreographer with this company for ten years, creating new productions and staging revivals. Later, that company evolved into the American Ballet Theater, with which Tudor maintained a close relationship throughout his life, in 1974 serving as its artistic director. In 1950, he retired from dancing and headed the faculty of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School. From time to time he also taught at Julliard. He served as artistic director of the Royal Swedish Ballet (1963-1964) and as a professor at the University of California. He choreographed five ballets for the New York City Ballet and was awarded numerous international prizes. He passed away in New York on 20/04/1987. He is considered one of the most authentic creators of modern dance. He collaborated with the GNO on one occasion, choreographic the ballet sections in the production of the opera Orpheus and Eurydice [Orfeo ed Euridice] (Herodeion, Athens Festival 1955).
