Dutch tenor, he is widely acknowledged to be one of the most popular tenors of his generation. A winner of Christina Deutekom Voice Competition, he studied at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, and under the American tenor James McCray. He gave his professional debut as Macduff (Macbeth,Nationale Reisopera, Enschede, Holland), followed by his Italian debut as Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca, Rome). He was a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf, 1997/2000) and in 2006 he joined the Frankfurt Opera. He has sung at the Bayreuth and Baden-Baden Festivals, Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, London), Vienna State Opera and Teatro alla Scala, Milan. He made a spectacular jumping in debut at the MET, New York, as Siegmund (Die Walküre, 2012). Recent engagements include the title roles in Tannhäuser (Budapest, Dresden State Opera), Tristan und Isolde and Strauss’ Guntram, as well as Siegmund (Die Walküre, Barcelona).
