He was born on 06/12/1812 in Brussels. He studied low and completed his PhD at the State University of Leuven. However, as he didn’t want to work as a lawyer, he devoted himself to translation and writing plays and libretti. He published many successful works. His first plays were performed in Brussels from 1829 to 1834. Then he went to Paris, where he worked with the author and librettist Alphonse Royer. It was a collaboration that developed into a deep friendship. Their first major collaboration was the translation and adaptation of the opera Lucia di Lammermoor for the French stage. The premiere of the opera in Paris took place on 06/08/1839 at the Renaissance Theatre and received enthusiastic reviews. After this success, others followed, including La favorita (1840) and Jérusalem (1847), while Vaëz wrote the libretto for the opera Rita (1840). This is another successful opera by the composer Gaetano Donizetti. He was also deputy director of the Odeon Theatre and then of the Paris Opera. The operas La favorita and Rita have benn performed at the Greek National Opera.
