Of Spanish descent, she was born in Rouen, France, on 23/2/1932. Initially she studied at the Conservatory of her home town under Lucienne Vifquain. Having won a first prize at the competition of Verviers, she appeared as Leonore (La favorita) at Verviers and as Delilah (Samson and Delilah) and Amneris (Aida) at the Opera of Rouen (1962). Then she appeared in cities of northern France and Belgium, where she interpreted roles, such as: Charlotte (Werther), Carmen, Azucena (Il trovatore) and Dulcinea (Don Quixote). She also appeared as Delilah in Nice alongside Mario del Monaco. In 1970 she made her first appearance at the Paris Opera (Palais Garnier) as Princess Eboli (Don Carlo) and then as Fricka (Der Ring des Nibelungen) and Laura (La Gioconda), as well as in the operas Dialogues des carmelites και Jenůfa. She excelled as Waltraute (Die Walküre) at the Bayreuth Festival (1972) and as Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She has appeared at the Royal Monnaie Theatre in Brussels, Opera of Bordeaux, Aix-en-Provence Festival, as well as in Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Liege, Cologne, Geneva, Lisbon, and Boston. Her repertoire includes operas by Berlioz, Gounod, Massenet, Donizetti, Monteverdi, Gluck and Mascagni, while she has also excelled as an interpretor of Wagnerian roles. She has recorded the operas Romeo and Juliet (Roméo et Juliette, alongside Mirella Freni, EMI), Maria Stuarda (alongside Montserrat Caballe and José Carreras, Ponto, 1972) and Don Carlo (Ponto, 1976).
