He was born in Barcelona, Spain on 13/03/1932. He studied at the Conservatory of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona under Gali Markoff, graduating with a gold medal (1960). He debuted at this same theater as Don Gaspar [The Favorite/La favorita], opposite Manuel Ausensi and Fedora Barbieri (1962). He was invited by Herbert von Karajan to the Salzburg Festival, where he debuted as Malcolm [Macbeth], under Wolfgang Sawallisch (1964), a performance which marked the beginning of his international career. He regularly collaborated with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (1964-72, 1977-78), as well as with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1969-1977), the Oper Frankfurt (mainly in the period 1966-1971) and the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1967-1970). In 1966 he appeared at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Manrico [The troubadour/Il trovatore], as well as in Toronto as Turiddu in Rustic Chivalry [Cavalleria rusticana] and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as Radamès [Aida]. His appearances also include: the Vienna State Opera as Riccardo [A masked ball/Un ballo in maschera] and in the title role in Don Carlos (1967/69, 1977/78), Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie Brussels (1967), Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm as Calàf [Turandot] (1969), in Vancouver as Cavaradossi [Tosca] (1973), at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona as Knight Renato des Grieux [Manon Lescaut] (1976), at the Staatsoper Hannover in the title role in Otello (1984), Prague, Budapest, Paris, Hamburg, Lyon, Copenhagen, Oslo and San Francisco. He has worked with renowned conductors such as Karl Böhm, Otto Kemp, Claudio Abbado, etc. In 1992 he retired from stage appearances and devoted himself to teaching. He worked with the GNO once, singing the role Canio [Pagliacci] (1979/80).
